Ronald Koeman rejected Barcelona top job after Ernesto Valverde sack

Current Dutch head coach Roland Koeman recently admitted that FC Barcelona approached him after sacking Ernesto Valverde in January.

Koeman, who captained the Catalans to their first UEFA Champions League title at Wembley in 1992, admitted that the LaLiga champions approached him as they searched for a new manager.

"Yes, it's true that Barca spoke to me but I said no because I'm with the national team and I have a commitment to stay in this role," the former Everton boss said, via Dutch publication Diario Sport.

Koeman also added: "I have two more years of contract with the [Holland] national team and I don't like to talk about Barca.

"It's uncomfortable for many reasons. Now I have a job and it's not fair to talk about this. If that opportunity comes then it comes and if it doesn't come, it doesn't come… but never say never."

Due to his close ties with the Blaugrana, the Holland Football Association set up a clause in the 56-year-old's contract allowing him to take over at Camp Nou after Euro 2020.
