Real lose ground on Barca after another loss

Real Madrid lost some ground in the LaLiga title race  following a shock 1-0 defeat to Real Mallorca on Sunday afternoon.

There were no Thibaut Courtois, Eder Militao and Karim Benzema from the midweek win over Valenci with the trio out through injury.

Madrid were slow out of the starting blocks 13 minutes in and trailed when Nacho Fernandez helped Verdat Muriqi's glancing header following a floated ball over Andriy Lunin and into the net.

Los Blancos struggled to breakdown the low-block and very nearly gave away a second from Muriqi's teasing shot off a scramble before Lunin smothered.

The title holders continued to have little of the clear-cut momentum later on in the half and the likes of Federico Valverde, Dani Ceballos and Vinicius Junior were reduced to shots from afar.

With very few openings early in the second half, Los Blancos got a chance to go level when goalkeeper Pedrag Rajkovic upended Vinicius in the area and conceded a penalty.

The visitors were unable to make the opportunity count this as Rajkovic redeemed himself and denied Marco Asensio from the spot-kick 12 minutes from the resumption.

Carlo Ancelotti's attention a little to the midway stage of the second half turned to the bench and he decided to bring on Luka Modric in place of Valverde.

Shortly thereafter, a little dink wide of the offensive area by Asensio opened space for a curling shot which the Spaniard directed well of the mark.

Mallorca were under further pressure later on and needed another stern block from Rajkovic to stop Vinicius profiting from a galloping run down the left and into the area.

Los Blancos still battled to get beyond the lines of the host with substitute Mariano Diaz and David Alaba closing-in but to no avail and thus their side suffered a shock defeat.
