Wydad 'pushing' to retain Lorch, determined not to repeat Mailula misstep

After the departure of South African attacker Cassius Mailula, Wydad Athletic Club are now reportedly working hard to retain Thembinkosi Lorch to avoid a similar situation.

Mailula officially announced his departure from the Botola Pro League giants on Monday, following the expiration of his loan deal on June 30. He has since returned to his parent club, Toronto FC.

Another player Wydad could be set to lose is Lorch, whose loan contract also expired on Monday. The talented attacker was on loan from Betway Premiership heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, several reports suggest that the Red Castle have already informed both Sundowns and Lorch’s representatives of their desire to keep the player beyond his loan spell.

With that being said, concerns have emerged over the transfer fee Sundowns are reportedly demanding. It's believed the South African champions are asking for at least €1 million (approximately R20 million) for the player's permanent move.

Despite financial challenges, new report from Al Jarida indicates that Wydad are doing everything in their power to secure Lorch’s services permanently.

Nyoso, as the 30-year-old is Affectionately known, scored one goal in three matches, earning praise for his performances on the world stage.

With Mailula’s exit already confirmed, it remains to be seen whether Wydad will finalize a deal for Lorch ahead of the 2025/26 season or risk losing another key player.
