Bolton, meanwhile, had already put some minutes under their belt after playing to a 1-1 draw against Tranmere Rovers last weekend.
"It was really pleasing. We spoke about being better out of possession, we conceded far too many goals last season and we can't do that again if we want to achieve our objectives," Schumacher told told Wanderers TV.
"We spoke about being defensively well organised, everybody participating. Can't have anybody in the squad who doesn't understand the value and the importance of defensive duty. We've hammered home for 11 days.
"We haven't done anything about pattern of play. It's just been all about structure and you seen today when you get it right, it's difficult to break down and when you're in good positions, you inevitably cause the opposition a problem as well. So from that point of view, it's very pleasing.
"We should have kept a clean sheet against Tranmere. We made a mistake in the last minute of the game, but today we managed to keep a clean sheet against a really talented side."
