'Riveiro's Al Ahly had a better CWC than Sundowns'

A former Nigeria international claims that Jose Rivieiro's Al Ahly were the best-performing African team at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Al Ahly, Mamelodi Sundowns, Wydad Casablanca and Esperance were all eliminated in the group stage phase last month.

Sundowns and Esperance were the only African teams to secure wins in the group stages, while Al Ahly registered two losses and a draw.

Wydad, meanwhile, lost all three matches against Manchester City, Juventus and Al Ain.

“The African teams were below par, and I'm sad that none of them were able to go far in the competition," Babangida said on Al-Ahly TV.

“Al-Ahly, for example, played great matches, but they needed to focus more on achieving results. Perhaps they lacked some focus, and if that had been achieved, it would have been possible to qualify for the next round.

"Al-Ahly, just its name was enough. It gave the best performance among the African clubs participating in the Club World Cup, especially in the last match. Followed by Sundowns.”
