'You can't participate in Club World Cup and not be considered for AFCON'

The chorus belted out by those calling for the reinstatement of Thembinkosi Lorch in the Bafana Bafana squad has gotten louder after his performance in a FIFA Club World Cup match against Manchester City.

Lorch, currently at Wydad Casablanca on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, gave a soul-stirring display against Pep Guardiola's men, though his side ultimately lost 2-0.

The attacking midfielder was taken off with six minutes left. .

"Nothing shocks me about Lorch, to be honest. I know what he's capable of, and he's always striving to improve," reveals Mlungisi Ngubane.

"The player who disappointed me was Cassius Mailula. However, I understand that it wasn't easy for him, and they both showed willingness to perform.

"The challenge for Mailula was that he was up against top, experienced defenders. On the other hand, Lorch has genuinely improved. He is no longer playing the unstructured 'lokshin' football he was once known for. He is adapting to the level he is competing at now.

"The FIFA Club World Cup is not a pre-season tournament; it’s serious competition featuring the best players in the world. The football played there is of a high calibre, and if you are taking chances, you will be hammered," adds the former dribbling wizard.

'Professor' holds the view playing outside of South Africa has helped Lorch rediscover his groove.

"He is now more focused and less likely to engage in unnecessary dribbling. Although there are times when individual brilliance is needed.

"Lorch performed well in that match, but for Mailula, the occasion may have been overwhelming.

"This indicates that Lorch has a rightful place in our Bafana Bafana squad for the AFCON. You can't participate in the Club World Cup and not be considered for the AFCON squad. Lorch can certainly add value to our national team."

The Free State-born lad will have another opportunity to impress as the Moroccan giants take on Italian powerhouse Juventus on Sunday (18:00 SA time).
