Manchester City were unable to cement top spot in the Premier League after playing to a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.
Rodri was one of two major absentees after being ruled out for the remainder of the campaign through injury, while Rico Lewis came into the midfield as Kevin de Bruyne was not available again.
It was a difficult start for the Citizens, who struggled for creativity in the final third without De Bruyne on the pitch while the home side did look promising going forward.
There were no clear-cut chances for most of the first half, but Pep Guardiola's men did get the breakthrough when Josko Gvardiol opened his account with a lovely individual effort after some good work by Jack Grealish.
The home side, meanwhile, had to wait until the first-half stoppage time register a serious strike at goal, as Joelinton unlashed a powerful volley from 12 yards out that forced Ederson into a good save.
Newcastle carried that momentum into the second half and won themselves a penalty after Anthony Gordon was brought down by Ederson. The winger took responsibility himself and made no mistake from 12 yards out to level matters.
City coach Pep Guardiola responded with his first change after the hour mark, as Phil Foden was finally introduced in place of Illkay Gundogan, who was not at his best on the day.
Th Citizens did push for a winner, with Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland passing up good chances in the latter stages as the two sides settled for a share of the spoils.
Guardiola's men have now failed to win their last three matches across all competitions.
