Newcastle run riot over struggling Chelsea

Chelsea had a day to forget after going down 4-1 to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Benoit Badiashile and Lesley Ugochukwu were the only changes by the Blues following the thrilling draw with Manchester City, as the Magpies welcomed back Bruno Guimaraes from suspension.

The bulk of the opening momentum happened on the side of the visitors, who overloaded the left of the attacking area through amongst others Conor Gallagher.

Newcastle went ahead after the opening 13 minutes where a pass from Lewis Miley beat the stretch from Badiashile and left Alexander Isak to find the back of the net.

However, the lead lasted just ten minutes as Raheem Sterling riffled in a free-kick from the edge of the area after he had won the set-play himself.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope got himself in a spot of bother ten minutes to halftime after conceding possession to Gallagher whilst trying to play out, but it went unpunished.

Newcastle were keen to go on the front-foot and restore their lead with a half-chance through Kieran Tripper following a free-kick, but Marc Cucurella quicky closed down the move.

However, the Magpies did go back in front in the 60th minute when Jamaal Lascelles made a perfect run to the area with no one tracking him and nodded in Anthony Gordon's cross.

It was three within a minute after Joelinton robbed Thiago Silva off possession high up the field and comfortably tucked past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino brought on Armando Broja, Moses Caicedo and Mykhailo Mudryk in an effort to change the tide with 20 minutes to go.

Although, a set-back followed after three minutes when Reece James got his marching orders for bringing down Gordon in a dangerous position and picked up a second caution before the red card.

Gordon caused more misery seven minutes from time after drifting in-field and cutting inside to lash into the near corner.

In the end, the Magpies marched to a dominant victory after a three-match winless run as the Blues slow start to the season continues.
