Ruthless Liverpool show Man Utd no mercy

Liverpool showed their arch-rivals Manchester United no mercy after romping to a 7-0 victory at Anfield on Sunday evening.

United were unchanged from last Sunday's Carabao Cup triumph, but the Reds brought Andrew Robertson, Jordan Henderson and Coady Gakpo.

It was a strong start by the Red Devils and a cross-cum shot from a tight angle by Antony Santos forced his countryman Alisson Becker to dive down and parry for a corner.

Liverpool pushed the Red Devils to the edge later on and a ball from Robertson towards Darwin Nunez led to a stern block from Lisandro Martinez.

The Red Devils should've gone ahead on the half-hour mark with a diving header at the far-post by Bruno Fernandes, who headed across the face of goal.

Liverpool sustained the pressure and hit the front when Gakpo cut inside of Raphael Varane from the right and curled beyond goalkeeper David De Gea.

United were cut open again soon after halftime as Nunez pounced on a cross from Harvey Elliott following a goal-mouth scramble and headed in.

It got worse for the Red Devils five minutes later when Gakpo completed his brace after he dropped in-behind before slotting in off the far post from a tight angle.

Erik Ten Hag's men were all at sea and struggled to contain the relentless attacks by the Reds, but brought on Scott McTominay and Alejandro Garnacho.

Liverpool added to United's woes midway in the second half when Mohamed Salah latched onto a loose ball and thumped in off the bar and became the first player to score in five consecutive league games in this fixture.

The Red Devils fell further behind with 15 minutes to go as Nunez leaped on the end of a floating ball by Henderson before heading into the far corner.

United's uncertain defending proved their undoing yet again and as a goal-mouth scrambled led to the ball falling to Salah, who made no mistake with a low first-time finish.

The Reds capped off a fine evening's work with two minutes to go when Roberto Firmino picked up a low pass and fired in from a tight angle and brought the match to a close.
