Liverpool overtake Man City with Chelsea scalp

Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League standings after a narrow 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday evening.

The Reds made three changes from their narrow win over Crystal Palace, one enforced, as goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher took the place of the injured Alisson while Andrew Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai were recalled.

The Blues captain Reece James made his first start since December 2023, as Jadon Sancho, Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke all supported striker Nicolas Jackson up top.

The sides were cautious in the early stages, although Chelsea shaded the possession stakes but with no chances to show for it.

The game took a different turn on the half-hour mark after Liverpool were awarded a penalty for a foul on Curtis Jones in the box.

Mohamed Salah stepped up for Arne Slot's charges and broke the deadlock with a confident kick that sent shot-stopper Robert Sanchez the wrong way.

Liverpool were forced to make a change moments later after Diogo Jota could not continue due to injury and he was replaced by Darwin Nunez.

After another quiet period, there was drama on the stroke of half-time after the referee initially awarded the Reds a penalty after Jones went down again in the box but he reversed his decision after he reviewed the incident on the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) monitor.

Enzo Maresca made an attacking change at half-time as Pedro Neto replaced Sancho.

The Blues were a threat immediately from the interval, as Jackson levelled matters three minutes after he got to end of a through ball with a toe-poked finish and although the referee initially ruled it out for offside, the VAR got into Chelsea's rescue.

However, Slot's men regained their lead just three minutes later after Jones finished off a through ball from Salah.

The visitors were chasing the game from there, frustrated by a solid Liverpool defence and in the last 14 minutes, Maresca made another attacking change as Christopher Nkunku replaced Madueke.

Chelsea were looking to break down a deep block from Liverpool in the the closing stages and Renato Veiga had a chance in added time with a close-range header that sailed over the crossbar.

In the end, the Reds held on and reclaimed a one point lead at the top of the log.
