Premier League match report Everton v Chelsea 06 August 2022

Chelsea got their Premier League campaign off to winning note after defeating Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park.

Thomas Tuchel gave official debuts to Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling, although Marc Cucurella was named on the bench after only arriving on Friday.

The home side were forced to make a change 18 minutes into the first half as Mason Holgate replaced Ben Godfrey, who picked up an ankle injury.

The game opened up after the 15-minute mark as Mason Mount forced Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into a save, before Édouard Mendy was called upon to keep out James Tarkowski at the other end.

Sterling thought he had secured a goal on his Blues debut in the 43rd minute when poked the ball beyond Pickford, although the strike was ruled out for offside.

Here are the biggest transfers that were completed this week!

The Blues finally got their reward in the seventh minute of time added on, as Jorginho calmly converted a penalty after Yerry Mina had fouled Ben Chilwell.

Not much changed for the Toffees in the second half, which prompted coach Frank Lampard to throw on Dele Alli for Dwight McNeil as they pushed for an equaliser.

Tuchel looked to his bench as well for the final 20 minutes, as Cucurella was given his debut in place of Koulibaly while Kai Havertz made way for Armando Broja.

Cucurella nearly made an immediate impact as he broke down the flank before picking out Sterling, who saw his strike deflect inches wide of the upright on 83 minutes.

In the end, Jorginho's penalty in the first half was enough to do the damage as Everton barely troubled Blues goalkeeper Édouard Mendy as they start the campaign with a loss.
