Robert Lewandowski backed to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo

Lewandowski, 32, enjoyed the most prolific season of his career to date in the 2019/20 campaign, when his 55 goals across all competitions inspired Bayern to the league, cup and UEFA Champions League treble.

Bavarians CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge lauded the Poland international's work ethic as the key to his longevity and backed him surpass Ronaldo's current level when he reaches the same age in three years' time.

"He played the season of his life and he lives for Bayern Munich. At 35, Robert will be even better than Cristiano Ronaldo is at 35. He's a wonderful role model for our younger lads."

The former Borussia Dortmund star was arguably the world's leading footballer last season, and recently admitted that he feels he would have deserved the Ballon d'Or award had the 2020 ceremony not been cancelled.

"Me," Lewandowski replied when asked by Sportowe Fakty who deserved to win the prestigious accolade this year.

"We won everything we could with Bayern. In every competition – Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League – I was the top scorer. I think a player who achieves this would win the Ballon d'Or."
