Pyramids 'decide' on Lakay's future

Egyptian Premier League giants Pyramids FC have reportedly made a decision regarding the future of South African forward Fagrie Lakay.

The out-of-favour Bafana Bafana striker joined the Sky Blues on a two-and-a-half-year deal in January 2022 and initially impressed with a string of strong performances.

However, Lakay’s enjoyment at the team changed in 2023 following the arrival of Congolese striker Fiston Mayele from Young Africans, with head coach Krunoslav Jurcic preferring the new signing in his attacking setup.

As a result, the 28-year-old was loaned out to fellow Egyptian club Ceramica Cleopatra FC in October 2024 in search of more game time. The move proved fruitful, with Lakay enjoying a solid run of form until the end of the season.

During his loan spell at Cleopatra, Lakay showcased his sharpness in front of goal, helping the team win the Egypytian League Cup and reaffirming his value in the Egyptian top flight.

With his loan stint now concluded, speculation has mounted over his next move, as it appears increasingly likely that he will part ways with Pyramids.

According to Daily Sports, Lakay is set to join Cleopatra on a permanent deal after the club opted to activate his buy-out clause, reportedly at the request of their head coach.

Despite this development, there have been reports in recent months suggesting the former Cape Town City star may be eyeing a return to South Africa.
