Africa Cup Of Nations match report Senegal v Egypt 06 February 2022

Senegal won their very first Africa Cup of Nations at the third time of asking with a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Egypt.

Senegal head coach Aliou Cisse made one change to his starting line-up with Ismaila Sarr replacing Bamba Dieng. Meanwhile, Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz also made just the one alteration with Emam Ashour coming in for Omar Kamal.

The Lions of Teranga were the side dominating possession and territory and began straight away putting pressure on Egypt, which would be the pattern throughout the match.

Cisse's men won a penalty with just four minutes gone when Mane was chopped down by a mistimed sliding tackle from Mohamed Abdelmonem. The Liverpool star stepped up and blasted the ball straight down the middle but it was brilliantly saved by Pharaohs goalkeeper Abou Gabal.

It was a definite ploy from Senegal to target the left side of the Egyptian defence with Ismaila Sarr giving Ahmed Fattoh a torrid time. The Watford man skinned Fattoh down the right and delivered a teasing cross to the far post but Mane was unable to make contact on the stretch.

Just three minutes later, Sarr once again showed his searing pace and ability to beat his man in a one-on-one situation when he once again got on the outside of Fattoh and delivered to the back post for Mane, who once again stretched but failed to get on the end of it in an almost identical opportunity to just moments earlier.

Mohamed Salah looked to make the difference when he went on a typically jinxing run but his shot was tame and straight at Edouard Mendy.

Salah threatened again shortly before the interval when he made another darting run out wide on the right channel, before cutting inside and driving the ball towards the near post but Mendy did brilliantly to tip it over the bar.

The Pharaohs had their first real opportunity of the second period and it was an excellent chance when Zizo's free-kick from the left found a completely unmarked Abdelmonim, but the centre-back headed wastefully over.

Egypt were now the side creating the chances and smelling blood when Trezeguet delivered in a cross from the left byline, which Fathy Hamdi got his head to but it was flicked wide.

The sides could not be separated after 90 minutes and so the match went to extra-time. In the very first minute of extra time Mane's pass with the outside of his foot put in Dieng. He broke forward and just about got the shot away as Hamdi charged in to make the challenge, but Gabal was there again to stop it.

Bamba Dieng then unleashed a ferocious long-range effort which dipped and swerved which was brilliantly kept out by Gabal. Soon after, Egypt worked the ball well around the box, before Hamdy hit one straight towards goal, but Mendy tipped it behind.

The sides could still not be separated after 120 minutes and a penalty shoot-out ensued. Abdelmonem hit the post but then Bounou Sarr's spot-kick was saved by Gabal.

Edouard Mendy saved Lasheen's penalty leaving it up to Mane to win it for his country and he buried the ball into the bottom left corner to send the Senegalese players and crowd into delirium.
