'The only match I know will be a battle is against Bafana'

A former Nigeria star has described the Super Eagles’ upcoming match against Bafana Bafana as a “big battle” due to the high stakes involved.

The upcoming international break could prove pivotal for the South African national team, who currently lead their qualifying group.

A strong performance could bring them closer to securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Hugo Broos’ side will face two qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria, scheduled for 5 and 9 September in Bloemfontein.

While South Africa’s first fixture against Lesotho is just as crucial, the clash with Nigeria is generating significant attention in Nigerian circles.

A Nigerian victory could disrupt or delay South Africa’s hopes of qualifying for the global tournament.

Additionally, Nigeria are hopeful that South Africa could face a three-point deduction for allegedly fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho in March.

Former Super Eagles defender Abiodun Obafemi commented on the situation, saying, "It’s too early to rule out our chances of qualifying. We should know by now that the typical Nigerian shines when nobody expects them to.

"That’s when you’ll see the best of these players. Let’s also remember that football is a funny game, and I know that this present crop of players knows what it takes to get there.

"It’s not only for Nigerians, but mostly for themselves. They’ll be doing themselves a lot of favours as well, because it would add to their profiles if they qualify.

"So, I believe we still have a chance, honestly. However, the only match that I know will be a big battle for the players is our game away to South Africa."
