Lesotho rope in SA coach ahead of Bafana WCQ clash

The Lesotho Football Association has appointed a South African coach to bolster their technical team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bafana Bafana.

Likuena are set to face Hugo Broos’ side on Friday, September 5, at Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium in South Africa. Four days later, they will travel to face Benin.

Currently fifth in Group C with six points, Lesotho trail group leaders South Africa by seven points, as SA have accumulated 13 points.

In preparation for the crucial September fixtures, Lesotho have added Upington City FC head coach Abram Mongoya in their technical team.

According to his representatives, Vodia Sports Management led by Gerald Baloyi, Mongoya is has joined the Lesotho national team camp on Sunday.

This appointment comes during the FIFA international window, with the domestic league set to pause for at least two weeks.

"The Lesotho Football Association, LeFA has engaged with Mr. Abram Mongoya, the current coach of Upington City Football Club about engaging him to be part of the technical team of the Lesotho National Men senior team, Likuena," reads Lesotho's statement shared with KickOff.

"Mr. Mongoya has shown interest in this undertaking, and it is therefore proper that LeFA officially notify and solicit the blessing of Upington City Football Club about the engagement of its employee.

"This engagement is only for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers which will be played in September and October 2025 and possibly an international friendly match that will be played in November 2025.

"He will join the team when it is in camp and during the FIFA breaks, which are three for the remainder of the year."
