Pitso snubbed? Zamalek 'set' to name new coach

Egyptian Premier League giants Zamalek SC have reportedly made a final decision on who will take charge of the team next season amid links to renowned South African coach Pitso Mosimane.

Mosimane, who has been a free agent since January, was consistently tipped to become the new coach of the White Knights. Zamalek had an underwhelming 2024/25 campaign, which ended under the guidance of an interim manager after the dismissal of Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro.

Peseiro was relieved of his duties following a poor run of results, including a shock elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup in the quarterfinals at the hands of Betway Premiership outfit Stellenbosch FC.

Since May, several high-profile coaches have been linked with the vacant role, including another SA mentor, Rulani Mokwena. However, the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns publicly stated he would not compete for the position out of respect for Mosimane.

Despite the speculation, Twaslnews.com now reports that Zamalek are set to appoint Belgian coach Yannick Ferrera as their new head coach. The 44-year-old has managed various clubs, most notably in Saudi Arabia, including Al-Fateh and Al-Riyadh.

The reports indicate that Ferreira is expected to arrive in Egypt soon to meet the club's board members, with Zamalek's sporting director scheduled to announce the details of the official decision regarding the Belgian tactician's potential appointment.

One major stumbling block in Mosimane's chances of landing the job reportedly stemmed from his previous stint with Zamalek’s fierce rivals, Al Ahly. According to reports, Zamalek has a new policy that prohibits the hiring of coaches who have previously worked in Egypt.

As a result, this rule seems to be the one that ultimately ruled out the three-time CAF Champions League-winning tactician.

With Zamalek seemingly off the table, Mosimane will continue his search for a new project ahead of the 2025/26 season. Given his remarkable track record, he is unlikely to be without options for long. He is widely regarded as one of the most successful African coaches.
