English club eyes Amajita's star

A South Africa Under-20 star has reportedly caught the eye of an English football club following Amajita’s historic success at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Queens Park Rangers, currently competing in the EFL Championship, are said to be monitoring Stellenbosch FC defender Tylon Smith.

The 20-year-old was one of the standout performers at the U20 AFCON, held in Egypt between April and May, where South Africa claimed their first-ever title with a 1–0 win over Morocco in the final.

Smith's commanding presence at the back and composed defensive displays played a crucial role in coach Raymond Mdaka’s team lifting the trophy. His performances earned him the prestigious Player of the Tournament award.

According to Soccer Laduma, QPR are considering a move for the young defender ahead of the upcoming season. The report also suggests that clubs in the United Arab Emirates have shown interest in Smith as well.

"There was an offer for Tylon from the UAE, but Stellenbosch refused. They are waiting on QPR," an source told Soccer Laduma.

Despite being promoted to Stellenbosch’s first team in August 2024, Smith is yet to make his senior debut. He has, however, been instrumental in the club’s reserve side, helping them compete for the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) title.

It remains to be seen whether Smith will secure a move to a prominent club in England’s second tier. However, it looks highly unlikely that chances of seeing him in the Betway Premiership next season are very slim.
