Benni lures ex-EPL star out of retirement for Kenya

Benni McCarthy has sensationally convinced a former Premier League star to come out of international retirement and represent Kenya once again.

Over the past year, several high-profile names across the continent have returned to international duty after previously turning their backs on their national teams.

Former Arsenal star and 2015 CAF Player of the Year, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, came out of retirement for Gabon after reportedly resolving issues with head coach Thierry Mouyouma.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe saw the surprise returns of Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona to the national set-up, after the former PSL-based duo had initially called time on their international careers.

This trend appears to be continuing, this time with McCarthy playing a central role.

The Cape Town-born coach announced his latest Kenya squad for the upcoming international friendlies against Chad, scheduled for 7 and 10 June.

The biggest surprise was the inclusion of former Tottenham Hotspur star Victor Wanyama.

Wanyama retired from international football with Kenya in September 2021 at the age of 30, and it is believed that McCarthy played a key role in convincing the defensive midfielder to reconsider his future with the Harambee Stars.

Wanyama currently plays for Dunfermline Athletic in Scotland’s second tier.

Other notable inclusions in the latest Kenya squad include Betway Premiership duo Brian Mandela (Onyango) of Stellenbosch FC and Brian Bwire of Polokwane City.
