Rhulani Mokwena on Orlando Pirates' goalkeeping headache

Pirates have four high-profile keepers at their disposal in the shape of new signing Brilliant Khuzwayo, Wayne Sandilands, Jackson Mabokgwane and Siyabonga Mpontshane.

The 28-year-old Khuzwayo switched allegiance to Pirates in June after rejecting a contract extension offer at Kaizer Chiefs, having grown tired of living in Itumeleng Khune's shadow at Naturena.

The former AmaZulu man only made 37 appearances in his six years with Amakhosi but convinced many that he is up to standard.

Mokwena has welcomed the selection headache Bucs face with their last line of defence.

"We've got the new goalkeeper coach, he worked at the highest level in the English Premier League [for Swansea City]. I think he's more than competent and ready to deal with something like that," said Mokwena when asked about the goalkeeping situation at the SAB Under-21 draw at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium on Monday.

"The portfolio is predominantly in line with the goalkeeper coach and it is why we made that change to strengthen that department from a goalkeeping perspective.

"But, other than that, I think we are more than equipped and we've got the personnel. The challenge that you have in football is greater when you don't have the personnel. It's less of a challenge if you've got quality within your team and that's the good problem we have at Pirates this season."

The Sea Robbers have also added Vincent Pule, Ben Motshwari, Asavela Mbekile, Linda Mntambo, Paseka Mako, Abel Mabaso, Meschack Maphangule and Kudakwashe Mahachi to their roster ahead of 2018/19.
