Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Lucky Maselesele feels they need to make additions at the back

Chiefs conceded 22 goals in 30 matches in 2017/18, and one of the best performers was Daniel Cardoso. Former coach Steve Komphela played a system with three central defenders and two wingbacks, which worked for the club because they did not concede often.

But heading into the coming campaign, Maselesele has expressed some concern, especially because Mulomowandau Mathoho has not been at his best, while Tsepo Masilela and Sibusiso Khumalo have left the club.

Lorenzo Gordinho is still out on loan to Bloemfontein Celtic, so he’d like to see Chiefs signing a defender or two to make sure they are as tight as they were last season.

“At the back, they need to add. 'Tower' [Mathoho] in terms of concentration he can make a lot of mistakes at times, so for me I feel that they need to sign one or two players,” Maselesele says.

Chiefs’ defence will be put to the test when they play ABC Motsepe League outfit Buya Msuthu in the Maize Cup on Saturday and in the Shell Helix Cup against Mamelodi Sundowns on July 21.
