Middendorp reveals why he dumped Swallows for Germany return

Less than a week since his last game in charge of Swallows, Ernst Middendorp is already getting down to work in Germany as he seeks to rescue SV Meppen from relegation.

SV Meppen sit bottom of the Bundesliga 3, five points from guaranteed safety with another 13 games remaining after abandoning another survival mission at Swallows FC.

Middendorp was at Swallows for 10 weeks taking charge of 11 league games and has now left The Birds clutching at straws with their safety not guaranteed at all.

"It is a very attractive task for me, also against the background of the ties to my homeland," Middendorp said after his first training session with SVM.

"I think, with my experience, I know where to start.

The experienced German tactician has extensive experience working in Germany starting in 1987 and has worked with Eintracht Nordhorn, Arminia Bielefeld, VfB Reheine, FC Gutersloh, KFC Uerdingen, VfL Bochum, FC Augsburg, and Rot-Weiss Eseen where he had his last job in his home country in 2009.

While Swallows will now have to negotiate their way to safety from the remaining eight games, Middendorp has 13 in his new job otherwise he will drop to the regional leagues.

With SVM, his contract runs up to the end of the season unlike at Swallows where the deal he cancelled ran up to mid-2026.

He has replaced Stefan Kramer and SVM sports director Heiner Beckmaan believes they have landed the right man for the task at hand.

"We are convinced that Ernst Middendorp can help us directly in the current situation with his enormous experience.

"I was in regular contact with him, and I know how intensively Ernst Middendorp was involved with German football, the 3rd division and especially with SV Meppen from afar," says Beckmaan.

First game in charge for Middendorp is on Saturday away to table toppers SV 07 Elversberg, who haven't won in the last two games.
