Why SuperSport could still be sold...

Following rumours of SuperSport United selling the club, KickOff.com has the latest on the situation.

Where there's smoke there's fire.

Even though SuperSport management are denying that the club is up for sale, CEO Stan Matthews has come out after Matsatsantsa avoided the dreaded promotion-relegation play-offs by the skin of their teeth and admitted that the club "sale rumours" destabilized the squad, hence their underperformance this past season, which led to the club parting parting ways with head coach Gavin Hunt.

United were rumoured to be in discussions with Bloemfontein Celtic to potentially take over their Betway Premiership status.

This publication has learned, however, even at the top of the year, that SuperSport as a club, owned by Multichoice Group, was under consideration to be sold.

Well-places sources close to the situation confided with this website, on condition of anonymity, that Multichoice bosses were in early talks with two foreign consortiums, who were evaluating a potential takeover.

Multichoice has been losing subscribers by big numbers to their DStv offering, having lost 1.2 million subscribers in the last year, according to TechCentral.

The Group, as a result, are evaluating their business strategies, with reports stating that the pay-tv broadcaster are considering unbundling SuperSport channels from their DStv packages, with the mooted change to offer sport channels on a separate bouquet.

SuperSport United initially came about after M-Net Television bought Pretoria City in 1994 primarily as a marketing tool to the MultiChoice satellite dish, which was yet to penetrate the township market in South Africa.

31 years on, the emergence of streaming services such as Netflix has hit MultiChoice's bottom line.

As things stand, it's unclear whether Matsatsantsa would still be sold.

Indications are that should United be sold, they could remain in the PSL, with the new owners retaining the club's structures.

The players at SuperSport have been told to report back for pre-season training on 29 June.
