U20 Afcon win to open MLS door for Chiefs, Downs stars?

After Amajita were crowned African champions, KickOff can reveal that two players, one each from Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns have been closely monitored by a team in the Major Soccer League in America.

The South African U20 team were crowned Africa Cup of Nations champions for the first time last month, after a 1-0 win over Morocco in the final.

Raymond Mdaka's charges, as a result, also qualified for the Under-20 FIFA World Cup later this year in September.

Amajita overcame the setback of a 1-0 loss to Egypt in their opening game, as two consecutive wins over Tanzania and Sierra Leone and a draw against Zambia saw them through to the quarter-finals.

The South African side won all their knockout games with a 1-0 scoreline, after eliminating Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

This website can reveal that there were scouts from MLS side San Diego, who were following Amajita throughout the tournament, with particular focus on Mfundo Vilakazi of Chiefs and Kutlwano Letlhaku from Sundowns.

"Those are the type of players... They are difference makers. Here (USA) there's a lot of simple, hard-working players. But in America they don't really have the skillful players who are creative, who can make something out of nothing," a reliable source in America told this publication.

"Those are the type of players when they look outside of the country, they are looking for that type of profile.

"In the MLS, what they call designed players, each team has three to five designated players, which are the guys that get paid the most, the guys with big contracts.

"They are always attacking players with creativity (who are in demand). All the other players, defenders, midfielders, goalkeepers they have enough of those (simple) type," the source added.
