Ex-SSU captain: SuperSport sale is heartbreaking

SuperSport United legend Thabo September expressed his heartbreak over the club's legacy seemingly disappearing.

Matsatsantsa has been sold to the owners of Siwelele Football Club due to persistent financial troubles, which were exacerbated by financial issues faced by broadcasters Multichoice.

SuperSport United has a rich history in South African football, having won three Premier Soccer League titles and produced some of the country’s best talent.

September, who both played for and coached the club, acknowledged that the end of the club was always a possibility, given that it was owned by a broadcasting company.

"It's sad, it's a painful moment in football," September tells KickOff.

"To see a club like this go is heartbreaking. But there's nothing we can do because we lack the funds to continue its legacy. It's truly unfortunate.

"My wish was always to see the club reach the standards set by Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns. However, if an over 100-year-old club like Wits can be sold so easily, this reflects the realities of South African football.

"It's disheartening to watch a club like SuperSport United vanish after surviving for 30 years. Multichoice is a business, and like any other, when something is no longer profitable, changes are inevitable. Their main focus is broadcasting, not owning a football club, so I suppose this outcome was bound to happen.

"The group of SuperSport United legends will continue to exist. We played for the club, so they can never take that away from us. We will continue to organize legends' games and social events with former players from other clubs. As former players of SuperSport United, we will strive to keep that spirit alive.
