'We shouldn't feel pity for SuperSport'

A former technical team member at SuperSport United has commented on the club's current predicament on the Betway Premiership standings, making a big admission regarding their prospects.

SuperSport are in a fight for their lives at the bottom of the log, occupying 14th spot with two games left (plus the one that was abandoned at half-time against Golden Arrows).

They are on the same number of points as 15th-placed Cape Town City, who have played two matches more, and any slip up gainst Orlando Pirates at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday (19:30) might be costly.

"Unfortunately, football has its own dynamics. Pirates are on a mission. After failing to win the Nedbank Cup and not succeeding in the CAF competitions, they are looking to strengthen their position since they have already secured second place," William Shongwe points out.

"Pirates are riding a wave of confidence at the moment, and there’s no mercy in this sport. When you have your opponent down, you need to make sure to finish them off.

"Cape Town City won against Polokwane City over the weekend, which is turning the tables in their favour. If SuperSport falters tonight, the consequences will be severe.

"But SuperSport have had their opportunities. We shouldn’t feel pity. They have had 10 months to sort out their problems, and this is where they find themselves.

"That’s just the nature of football. It’s a tough game that we love so much, and sometimes it gets harsh. I don’t see Pirates showing any mercy towards SuperSport - this is professional football," he continues.

The former goalkeeper says he saw the situation coming for Matsatsantsa, noting that you can manipulate the game to a certain extent.

"Take Maritzburg United, for example. They found themselves in a similar situation at one point, as they kept selling their best players. Eventually, it catches up to you.

"Look at the teams that have been relegated, they faced the same issues. Even (Moroka) Swallows got rid of players they could never adequately replace. You need to ensure that any replacements are of equal quality."
