Adams dedicates medal to late friend

Highly-rated midfielder Jayden Adams has dedicated the first league medal in his soccer career to a late friend and former teammate at Stellenbosch FC, who passed away tragically in 2023.

Adams clinched his first league medal when Mamelodi Sundowns beat Magesi FC 2-0 to clinch the Betway Premiership trophy at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday.

The Brazilians finished top of the standings with 73 points collected from 28 matches, losing only three games throughout the season. They have now won the league title eight times in succession.

Both Adams and the late Oshwin Andries played together at Stellenbosch.

The latter was stabbed during a party in the Western Cape and died six days after suffering severe wounds from the incident.

He was also the captain of the South African U20 team and was 19 years old when he met his untimely demise.

"Ja, obviously, everything I win goes to Oshwin. I would like to take this moment to say this to his family also,” said Adams during a post-match press conference in the capital.

‘It's a nice feeling for me to achieve this in only six months since coming here. This one goes to my family, my friends, and everyone back home in Cape Town. It's a nice achievement for me, and there's more to come."

Adams and Sundowns are still on course to win another trophy - the CAF Champions League - this season, where they have a final, first leg date with Pyramids FC this weekend.

“Yeah, it's tough for us playing every single week, three games in a row. But preparing and recovering are important for us. We have won the league now, and now we can focus on the CAF Champions League,” notes the soft-spoken star.
