Orlando Pirates star Fortune Makaringe flexes R3.4k grape Air Jordan 5s

Orlando Pirates star Fortune Makaringe has a fresh pair of kicks, and it is no other than the Jordan 5 Retro Alternate Grape!

As seen in his previous social media posts, Makaringe is an absolute fan of basketball and we can even make an argument for golf, but we will stick to the court for now.

Those that have been keeping close tabs on the playmaker know that he has a couple of basketball jerseys, including those of the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, as well as the NBA All-Stars jersey – which essentially confirms that he is an avid basketball fan.

The history behind the shoe

Well, by now many people should be well-aware that Air Jordan sneakers are the product of legendary basketball player Michael Jordan. With the first release of the Air Jordan 1 shoe coming back in 1984, six years later in 1990 marked the release of the Air Jordan 5.

It is believed that the 5s had initially dropped in just four colourways and the design of the sneaker was said to be inspired by a World War 2 Mustang fighter jet. It featured a reflective 3M tongue, mesh netting and side panels as well as a unique set of lace locks.

Makaringe's exact type of shoe came in 2000 when the company decided to retro the 5s into more colourways. The term 'retro' refers to the release (or re-release) of a colourway that happened after the shoe model's initial drop.

In South Africa, the shoe goes for no less than R3 399 at Shelflife.

Did you know?

According to Orlando Pirates' official website, Makaringe began taking football seriously aged 15 and played for Moroka Swallows in the Multichoice Diski Challenge before he joined Maritzburg United's senior side.

His idols growing up are said to be Steve Lekoelea and Teko Modise.
