Spurs duo in the clear to join Chiefs?

With a legal standoff seemingly looming, the Football Union of South Africa has commented on the situation regarding two Cape Town Spurs players who are strongly linked with Kaizer Chiefs.

Reports indicate that Asanele Velebayi, Liam Bern, and Luke Baartman have reached an agreement regarding their future.

It is believed Bern has joined AmaZulu FC, while Baartman and Velebayi have agreed to join Amakhosi.

Historically, Spurs and Chiefs have enjoyed a strong relationship, often trading top talents such as David Modise and David Nyathi before the merger with Seven Stars to form Ajax Cape Town at the turn of the millennium.

This connection was recently revived when highly-rated defender Rushwin Dortley transferred from Ikamva to Naturena.

However, with the Urban Warriors having suffered relegation to the amateur ranks, the club has requested the trio to return, asserting they still have existing contracts.

FUSA secretary Taelo Motloung has explained the situation to this website.

"If a team is relegated to the ABC Motsepe League, the player's contract with the club becomes null and void.

"That contract no longer holds because the club is now in the ABC Motsepe League, which is an amateur division.

"We all know there's no remuneration at the amateur level, so it automatically terminates the contract between the club and the player," said Motloung.
