11 brothers in South African football (PSL) history

Football can really be a family business, with siblings and twins becoming more common - here are 11 of South Africa's most famous brothers in the game.

Itumeleng Khune is arguably one of the most distinguished figures in South African football at the moment and for three years, he shared a changing room with his younger sibling Lucky at Kaizer Chiefs.

While Khune has gone on to become the captain of Amakhosi and one of their greatest ever goalkeepers, Lucky represented United FC, Vasco da Gama and Chippa United with little success.

The youngest of the three, Jacob, graduated from the Orlando Pirates academy in 2015 and now at 20 years old, the promising goalkeeper has yet to break into the senior setup.

Brothers following dad's legacy

Former Bafana Bafana striker Patrick Mayo's two sons have also entered the history books as two brothers within the local scene. Both excelled within the academy structures of SuperSport United and throughout the SA youth teams.

Khanyisile, 20, is still on the books of Matsastansa after a loan stint at Maccabi last season, while 21-year-old Khanyisa is on the books of Richards Bay in the GladAfrica Championship.

Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono's sons are other examples, as Bamuza and Matsilele both played under the guidance of their father at Jomo Cosmos. At 40, Bamuza has since retired after spending his entire career at Ezenkosi.

The late brothers

This week we paid tribute to the iconic Golden Arrows display in the 2009 MTN8 final over Ajax, in which Richard and Joseph Henyekane played pivotal roles in their 6-0 triumph under Manqoba Mngqithi.

The Kimberly-born duo were explosive players, with their searing pace one of the key strengths during their careers.

Richard went on to achieve more, having earned a lucrative switch to Mamelodi Sundowns after breaking into the Bafana Bafana squad shortly after Arrows' historic achievement.

Both, however, died in tragic car accidents in the short space of a year between 2014 and 2015.

Did you know?

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana star Tsepo Masilela and Orlando Pirates left-back Innocent Maela are half-brothers as they share the same father.

Your thoughts, please?

Which brothers of South African football were/are your favourites and can you remember other siblings throughout the years?
