Wydad star: Rulani gave me confidence

A Wydad Athletic Club goalkeeper has expressed his gratitude to former head coach Rulani Mokwena in a heartfelt message.

Benabid joined the Red Castle in January this year from fellow Botola Pro League side AS FAR Rabat, after being recruited by Mokwena.

However, the South African tactician was dismissed from his role last month after falling short of expectations, despite guiding the team to a respectable third-place finish.

In his message of appreciation, the 27-year-old goalkeeper praised Mokwena for playing a key role in facilitating his move to Wydad.

"Coach Mokwena was responsible for me to join Wydad Athletic Club," Benabid said per Elbotola.

"He was the one who insisted to the officials that I join the team, and he gave me indescribable confidence, especially after the period I spent with the Royal Army.

"It's not easy for any coach to trust you when you haven't played many matches, so I would like to thank him (Mokwena).

"I also thank the management, the players and the fans for the welcome, and this is something that forces you to give your best."

Benabid also shared his thoughts on Mokwena's successor, Amin Benhachem, who is set to lead the team at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

"With the coach's arrival, we managed to achieve three victories, and the results speak for themselves," said the Moroccan keeper.

"He brought a new spirit to the team, which is why we achieved three consecutive victories and finished the season in third place.

"Sharing leadership is a huge responsibility, and I will do everything I can to gain his trust and be able to shoulder this responsibility."
