FEATURE: Influential figures in the upcoming Soweto Derby - Siphelele Ntshangase

Ntshangase loves to have the ball at his feet, but enjoys things even more when he releases it to a teammate to score - what he would often describe as a "champagne pass."

After a slow start to life at Naturena when he joined halfway through last season, Ntshangase is now a key component in coach Giovanni Solinas's line-up, playing in a deeper role than most are used to seeing him in.

Given the number 10 before the start of the new campaign, the former Black Leopards and Baroka FC player is currently living up to the hype that comes with wearing the famous two digits on the back of a jersey.

A man who worked with him at Lidoda Duvha, Joel Masutha, says he is no longer just relying on his talent and is now working hard within a structure.

"He has always been a talented boy. He used to rely more on talent and he is someone who was an individualistic type of player. But if you look at him now, he is playing within the structure and he has been given the powers to dictate the play, which was the case also at Leopards," Masutha tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"I still feel like he needs to score more goals. For now I see he is playing far away from the goal area, but the good thing is that he is still controlling the midfield like he was before. He is not losing many passes, so I think in Solinas's system he is the main asset."

Owen da Gama, who worked with Ntshangase during his time as national Under-23 coach, has described the midfielder as an "unbelievable thinker."

"He is probably one of the most creative players in South Africa. He is highly intelligent, an unbelievable thinker and he has unbelievable vision. He sees passes that even people who are looking don't see.

"We have always known him as a number 10 behind the striker, but he has grown beyond that to be able to play in the midfield with [Willard] Katsande. I am not surprised he is achieving what he is achieving because he is an exceptional talent."

Like Masutha, Da Gama feels Ntshangase should try get on the score sheet more.

"It's definitely something that he can add to his abilities. He can surely sharpen that. It's something that can take him to another level."

Ntshangase will play a crucial role in midfield in the Soweto Derby on Saturday, a chance for him to shine on the biggest stage in local football.
