Portuguese side makes decision on Yaya Sithole

A Portuguese club has reportedly made a decision about South African playmaker Sphephelo 'Yaya' Sithole.

Sithole’s 2024/25 season was disrupted by a serious injury, which limited him to just 51 minutes of action for his loan club, Gil Vicente, according to Transfermarkt.

The midfielder suffered a fractured tibia and fibula while representing Bafana Bafana in a match against South Sudan in September 2024, ruling him out until he resumed training in May 2025.

Having failed to make an impact at Gil Vicente due to circumstances beyond his control, the club have reportedly decided to part ways with the South African, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.

The publication reports that Gil Vicente had the option to buy Sithole from Tondela, who competed in Portugal's second tier during the 2024/25 season.

The 26-year-old will now return to parent club Tondela, where he remains under contract until June 2026.

On a positive note, Tondela secured promotion to the Portuguese top flight after winning this season’s Liga Portugal 2.

It remains to be seen whether the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations bronze medallist will see out the remainder of his contract at Tondela, as he has also been linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs.
