Second European competition for Bafana defender again this season

Bafana Bafana defender Siyabonga Ngezana has suffered demotion in European club competition football in consecutive years.

Ngezana’s club FCSB were disappointingly knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the second qualifying round.

The Romanian champions were beaten home (1-2) and away (1-0) by KF Shkëndija from North Macedonia and thus relegated to the Europa League third qualifying round.

Last year, FCSB came stuck in the third qualifying round of the Champions League and then entered the Europa League in the play-off round from where they proceeded to the group stages.

Their journey ultimately ended in the last 16.

They will have another bite in the second-tier competition with a two-legged date against FC Drita from Kosovo up next.

Should they go through, then they will proceed to the play-off round which will determine their passage to the group stages where Roma, Aston Villa, and FC Porto are amongst those waiting.

Then in the case of an aggregate defeat to FC Drita then it will be another drop to the Conference League play-off round.

This leaves Ngezana with the possibility of playing in all three European club competitions this season.

Ngezana is expected to reach 100 games for FCSB with whom he has already won four trophies since joining from Kaizer Chiefs in July 2023.

The 28-year-old has seen his transfer value move up at least four times since he arrived in Romania.
