Munetsi’s value approaching R200 million as he keeps excelling in Europe

Nyasha Munetsi's transfer valuation has shot up towards the R200 million mark based on the displays that he keeps showcasing at French Ligue One club Stade Reims.

Munetsi is now in his fifth season playing for Reims and proven his qualities with each season earning himself a contract that will now keep him at the club until 2017.

Just last season, the lad from Harare won the Citizen's Player award from the French National Union of Professional Footballers and was selected as one of 12 nominees for the Marc-Vivien Foe award – an accolade handed to the best African player in Ligue One.

There has also been constant talk of a move to the English Premier League with Brighton and Hove Albion and Bournemouth mentioned along with Burnley and Watford.

Just to reaffirm his authority, Munetsi was on target on Sunday against Clermont Foot to put his contribution this season at one goal and one assist in two games after providing an assist in the opening day defeat to Marseille.

Last season, the 27-year-old scored seven (plus four assists) in 36 appearances playing either as a defensive midfielder or attacking though he was also used as central defender.

The regular game time in France has pushed his valuation by transfermarkt up to 9 million Euro (approx. R185 million) and with the contribution that he is making is expected to reach the million Euro mark before the end of the year.

At the beginning of last year, Munetsi was at 4 million Euro (approx. R82 million).

When he moved from Orlando Pirates to Reims in June 2019, Munetsi's transfer value was at 550 000 Euro (approx. R11 million) demonstrating just how much his value has grown since moving to Europe.

Munetsi's rise is inspiring having arrived at FC Cape Town in June 2015 as just another Zimbabwean teenager with nothing, but a dream pumped by tenacity up his sleeve.

He stayed in the Motsepe Foundation Championship for a season before Orlando Pirates snapped him only to then immediately loan him to Baroka.

After a season out in Limpopo where he was solid in central midfield, Munetsi returned to Pirates but found himself at the back of the queue and only got his first minutes of the season just past the halfway stage and eventually ended with 12 appearances.

The following season (2018/19), Munetsi was moved to central defence and though he only played just over half the league games Reims came calling and he was gone.

Good riddance to some Pirates fans who never appreciated or understood his value but great acquisition for Reims, playing in one of Europe's top leagues where he has already rubbed shoulders with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar.
