Mark Fish reveals reasons for snubbing Manchester United

After solidifying his status as one of South Africa's leading defenders at Orlando Pirates, Mark Fish parted ways with the Buccaneers in 1996 when he was snapped by Serie A giants Lazio, starting a decade-long journey through Europe for the former centre-back.

Fish ultimately made 15 league appearances during his spell with the Italian outfit before going on to represent Bolton Wanderers, Charlton Athletic and Ipswich Town in England, and he has revealed that he previously had an opportunity to join Manchester United as well.

"I spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson and actually watched Manchester United play against Everton on a Monday night," he told Planet Football. "He wanted me to train with them for a few weeks, acclimatize to the weather and the way his team played."

However, the 1996 CAF Africa Cup of Nations winner was at the time under an obligation to speak with Lazio as well and was quick to pen a deal with the club once their interest in his services became fully apparent.
