'When I signed Ngezana, I was told he's like Maradona'

The owner of FCSB has revealed that he signed Siyabonga Ngezana after the South African was described to him as “Diego Maradona as a centre-back".

Ngezana’s career has reached new heights since his move from Kaizer Chiefs to FCSB in July 2023.

The Sebokeng-born defender recently secured his second consecutive Romanian SuperLiga title, bringing his total to three trophies since moving to Europe, including a Romanian Cup.

Last season, he was also named the league’s Defender of the Season, and he experienced UEFA Europa League football in the current campaign, facing clubs such as Manchester United, Olympique Lyon, and Rangers.

FCSB owner Gigi Becali has now revealed that he knew he had to sign Ngezana after a strong recommendation from one of his most trusted associates.

"If MM Stoica praises someone, I have to buy him, because he doesn’t usually give praise," said Becali on the Fotbal Club show.

"When I signed Ngezana, he had been brought in by Vulturar (i.e. agent Florin Vulturar). MM said he looked like Maradona as a centre-back.

"If MM says something like that, it means the guy is a real footballer."

Ngezana has already made a total of 72 appearances for FCSB and scored two goals across all competitions.

His market value has also risen to €2.5 million (approximately R50 million), up from €750,000 (approximately R15 million) when he first joined.
