Mokotjo acquired Dutch citizenship through the process of naturalisation nearly two years ago, after he had been based in the Netherlands for over seven years.
The move was met with plenty of backlash from South Africans, given Dutch rules force the 27-year-old to renounce his South African citizenship.
However, SAFA assisted in the midfield maestro regaining his South African citizenship given his value to the national team and thus allowing him to hold dual nationality.
With his EU passport, Mokotjo was able to seamlessly move from the Eredivisie to the UK, where he has since established himself with English Championship side Brentford, despite the stringent measures on foreign – particularly South African – footballers obtaining work permits.
Now, with just four Bafana caps to his name, Mothiba could become the next star to make the switch to England given his rich vein of form with French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.
Having moved to France in July 2014, the 22-year-old forward will soon be eligible to acquire an EU passport through a similar process to that of Mokotjo, paving the way for him to eventually make the switch, should the opportunity arise.
“Yeah, it has [crossed my mind]. I’ve been there for almost five years – I went to Europe, I think, in 2014 so it’s almost five years there,” he said.
“It’s also important for us as players to get this because it will be easier to move around Europe. That’s why, if you stay in Europe for a long time, it’s important to get citizenship. So, I’m looking forward to getting [a French passport] soon.
“With this you can go to Premier League easily, and that’s every player’s dream – to play in the Premier League.”
