Teboho Mokoena's match-winning goal was predicted in pre-match conversation

Man of the Match Mokoena was the star of the show for South Africa on Thursday after he netted the only goal of a 1-0 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying win over neighbours Zimbabwe.

The SuperSport United midfielder netted his second goal of the campaign when he put Bafana Bafana ahead in the 26th-minute, rising highest to head home from a Keagan Dolly cross.

His effort saw Hugo Broos' extend their lead over Ghana at the top of the Group G standings to three points and left the national team within touching distance of the next round of qualifiers.

And, speaking after the match, Mokoena revealed that he and teammate Tercious Malepe had enjoyed a premonition-like discussion about him scoring in the build-up to the clash.

"Funnily enough, me and my roommate Tercious were talking about it before the game that my goals take us to the next round," Mokoena said.

"At the [2019 U23 Africa Cup of Nations], my goal [against Ivory Coast] took us to the knockout stage, which took us to the Olympics.

"So, we were talking about that before the game and when I scored that goal... You know you are full of emotions and you are happy.

"I was thinking about it, 'ah, life is very weird, now I was playing Olympics, now we're about to take our country to World Cup.' It's very amazing."

Mokoena, who had never scored a senior goal for South Africa prior to the current campaign, is the country's leading goalscorer in the current qualifiers with two goals to his name.

He previously scored against Ethiopia, during a match in which South Africa won 3-1, and now also ranks as one of only 14 players to have scored 2+ goals in World Cup qualifiers for Bafana.
