Percy Tau on brink of breaking AFCON qualifying record held by Sibusiso Zuma

South Africa's 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign is set to get underway this week when Bafana Bafana take on Group K rivals Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Thursday evening.

The encounter is the first of four qualifying matches for South Africa against Morocco and Liberia – as opposed to six following Zimbabwe's FIFA-imposed ban – which will determine whether or not Hugo Broos' side reach the competition for the first time since 2019.

Star forward Percy Tau is one of the players who have been named in Broos' squad for the task and the Ahly frontman's performances are likely to be instrumental in whether or not his country book a ticket to the showpiece tournament in Ivory Coast next year.

Since making his debut in 2015, Tau has scored eight times during qualification rounds for the tournament for South Africa, which is currently a national team record he jointly holds with Sibusiso Zuma for the most goals in qualifying.
