Ajax Amsterdam yet to appoint U18 coach amid Steven Pienaar links

Former South Africa captain Steven Pienaar made his coaching debut on Saturday afternoon when he stepped up from the assistant coach's role to occupy the dugout for Ajax U18's friendly win over AZ Alkmaar.

The 39-year-old, who is believed to hold a UEFA A License, was handed the reins for the practice match after former coach Dave Vos departed to join Giovanni van Bronckhorst's backroom staff at Rangers in Scotland.

Pienaar was once again pitchside for Ajax's UEFA Youth League clash against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday, although on this occasion it was former Netherlands international John Heitinga who was listed by UEFA as the man in charge of the team.

At present, it appears as though the former Everton teammates will share the responsibility of overseeing proceedings with the U18 team and the club have confirmed that no permanent replacement for Vos has been appointed.

"As of this moment, there's no permanent replacement appointed for Dave Vos," a spokesperson for the club told snl24.com/kickoff on Tuesday. "If there's any news on this matter we will communicate this on our official website."

Pienaar spent five years of his playing career with Ajax where he made more than 130 appearances across all competitions, winning two Eredivisie trophies and the KNVB Cup along the way.
