The 39-year-old retired centre-back who could also play as a left-back is now a successful businessman situated in Johannesburg where his company Gordon MacKenzie Gilbert (GMG) handles mining machinery.
"We supply underground mining machines. So yes I've been doing it for three and a half years. I'm based in Joburg, and the business is also in Joburg.
"I'm married with two children, one boy and one girl. They are three-and-a-half, and two years."
Gilbert who also played for the likes of Mpumalanga Black Aces and Moroka Swallows, says his new career does not mean he has entirely left the game as he is currently busy with his coaching badges.
"I'm busy with my coaching badges at the moment. So I'm sitting with my (FIFA) B license as we speak, obviously, I've got my ambitions to get my Pro license.
I'm at a point where I'm trying to get my A license, then my Pro License. So that's ultimately my goal, but because of Covid-19, I wasn't able to fly to the UK to conclude with my certificates.
"I will remain in the mining business until such time I can get back into football and to coaching at least. I own the business so I will always keep an eye on it, but I definitely want to get back into football. I would like to coach in the PSL.
"I'm happy with how my football career turned out, I mean there was political challenges like it's always is with certain situations.
I just think my career was a little bit premature, just played 13 professional years, definitely, I think I've could have put in a few more years. Niggling injuries were just recurring."
