Molangoane was dismissed on Tuesday night in his club’s 3-2 defeat to Platinum Stars at Moruleng Stadium.
Derek Blanckensee, the PSL general manager, confirms that the rules state that any player who gets a subsequent sending-off during the same season gets a suspension that will be increased by a further one match from the suspension previously served.
According to Chapter Five: Disciplinary Matters (Dismissals)…
‘Any player dismissed from the pitch, tunnel or dressing rooms by the referee (i.e. “red carded” or sent off, including dismissal as a result of two (2) yellow cards awarded in the same match) for the first time in any season will be suspended from participation in the next two (2) matches to be played by his team in any official competition under the auspices of the League,’ reads the NSL rules.
‘For each subsequent occasion that a player is dismissed during the same season the period of suspension will be increased by one (1) match from the suspension previously served. Any period of suspension or part thereof which remains outstanding at the end of a season must be served at the commencement of the next season.’
Molangoane was sent off in the first half during Chippa’s season opener against Kaizer Chiefs and after serving a two-match suspension returned to play 90 minutes against Free State Stars before he was dismissed again last night against Dikwena after having come on as a substitute.
The pint-sized midfielder had replaced Philani Shange after 28 minutes but was then heading to the dressing rooms 40 minutes later after being shown his second yellow of the match.
Should Molangoane be sent off again this season after serving his three-match suspension, he will miss another four games with the number of games that he sits out increasing to five if he gets a fourth red card this season.
Morgan Gould holds the record for the most sending-offs in one season after he was sent off thrice in the same season (2007/08) while turning out for Jomo Cosmos.
The PSL has kicked off to a disturbing rate of dismissals with 17 red cards already issued by referees in the 45 League and cup games played to date.
Bidvest Wits striker Henrico Botes added his name to the list of bad-boys last night in his team’s 1-0 win over SuperSport United joining Bongani Zungu, Dean Furman, Ndumiso Mabena, Siyabonga Nhlapo, Vukile Mngqibisa, Tebogo Monyai, Jackson Mabokgwane, Molangoane, Ugonna Uzochukwu, Themba Shabalala, Maximillian Mbaeva, Buhle Mkhwanazi, Kingston Nkhatha, Lehlogonolo Masalesa and Ajax Cape Town assistant coach Ian Taylor in the list of those that have been red-carded.
