Steve Barker questions 'VAR-like' call in Stellenbosch FC defeat to Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the semi-final of this year's MTN 8 competition after recording a 1-1 (4-3) penalty shootout win over Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday in a match marred by crowd trouble.

The Amakhosi were almost made to pay the penalty earlier in the encounter, however, when match referee Jelly Chavani belatedly awarded Stellenbosch FC a spot-kick following an alleged hand ball by Keagan Dolly.

Before the penalty could be taken though, Chavani, after consultation with the fourth official, rescinded the decision and allowed play to resume much to the confusion and consternation of the home bench at the time.

Replays suggested that the correct outcome was achieved, with the ball appearing to have struck Dolly on the stomach, but VAR-like the manner in which the original decision was overturned was questioned by Stellies coach Steve Barker after the match.

"I heard that it probably was the correct decision," Barker conceded. "But whether we have a delayed VAR system in our country, unofficially, it seems like it was the case, so as long as there is consistency with that going forward.

"I'm not too sure if the other team today had got the penalty with two minutes to go that it would have been overturned… But hopefully it would have been."

Chiefs ultimately went on to secure the victory following a penalty shootout in which captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, playing his first match in more than a year, saved two spot-kicks from Deano van Rooyen and William Likuta.
