Itumeleng Khune was beaten twice from the former Orlando Pirates player’s boot, the first time a rocket of a shot that took a slight deflection and had him flat-footed.
Mabena’s second goal from the penalty spot was very cheeky though as he had the confidence to put the Bafana Bafana number one on his knees and going the wrong way with a slow little dink.
“You can ask my teammates, it’s what I’m doing at training,” he told SuperSport upon winning the man of the match award after the 2-0 victory.
“You know, the last time I was gonna play in the Nedbank Cup we were practising penalties and the coach said I mustn’t take a penalty. I insisted to take one, and I took it the way I took it today.”
Sabena was happy to mark his return to the team with two goals and is looking to kick on for the rest of the season.
“It was a difficult game for me coming from a three-game suspension and coming straight back to the starting line-up, I wanted to cement my place again,” he said.
“But I’m happy with the performance, the boys have done well today.
“We got the first goal that we wanted and I think we sat a little bit back allowing them to come at us but I was happy that we didn’t concede in the first half.
“And in the second half we came back and got the second one which cemented the game.”
