Rhoo, Shoes, Doc, Bhele & Legs of Thunder make up star-studded Dream Team

In this edition of My Dream Team, KickOff catches up with former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana international Naughty Mokoena.

The former Moroka Swallows and AmaZulu FC star lists the 11 best players he played alongside in his football career, both on the local and international stages.

Formation: 4-4-2

"I will go with 4-4-2 because that's what we used to play. These latest formations of 3-5-1, 3-5-4-2 or whatever... Hayi, we didn't know those things, then."

Goalkeeper: Brian Baloyi

"He's got everything you need from a good goalkeeper. Brian was the best. He knew how to command his backline. He could communicate with his defenders, and it was not easy to score against Brian Baloyi due to his good communication skills with the defenders."

Defenders: Sizwe Motaung, David Nyathi, Lucas Radebe, Gary McNab

"My right-back, I have got three but I have to choose one. But I will choose this one guy who was a workaholic but underrated; people didn't understand him, they only took note of him at Jomo Cosmos. I'm talking about Sizwe Motaung. I have played with Sizwe at AmaZulu, I also received my national team call-up when Sizwe was still part of Bafana Bafana. It was fun to be around him because he was always joking.

"My left-back back is David Nyathi, for his leadership skills, the way he possesses himself, and the way he talks.

"At centre-back, it's Lucas Radebe. Captain qualities. He had a great influence. Before a match, he knew how to calm everyone down by making everyone laugh, he made you feel relaxed. And his understanding of the game is unmatched.

"I will pair him with a former teammate at Swallows, Gary McNab. A hard tackler and and-nonsense player who always gets stuck in. If you pair him with Lucas Radebe you get experience and hard tackling."

Midfielders: John Moshoeu, Doctor Khumalo, Helman Mkhalele, Jerry Sikhosana

"I will put two dangerous players, John 'Shoes' Moshoeu and Doctor Khumalo. They will supply you with balls until you don't want them anymore. These are the best creative players we had as a country. You know what, comparing my generation with the current players is a joke. Show me one player currently who is better than Doctor Khumalo and Shoes Moshoeu. All these guys on my team deserve to be captains, but I will choose Doctor Khumalo to be my captain.

"Do you know what Shoes used to say? He would say to you, hey njii!! Ungazeli umile wena bazokutshontsha! Meaning, don't dare fall asleep while on the pitch, otherwise, they will steal you [laughs]. He always reminded me this is not home but we are here to work.

"On the wing, I will put Helman Mkhalele. He's a very sweet and humble guy, but just give him the ball, and he will take them on. Jerry Sikhosana will be on the other side and he will fight to get a goal in every match. If Jerry finished a match without scoring a goal, it became a problem. That's how hungry he was."

Strikers: Siyabonga Nomvethe, Sibusiso Zuma

"These two guys who played for African Wanderers. They were known as the Terrible Twins, Siyabonga Nomvethe, and Sibusiso Zuma.

"You know if Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs didn't break that combination, those guys wouldn't have stopped scoring even now.

"You know the team I have selected here is full of players with hunger. They always wanted to play football, they always wanted to win. That's why I chose this eleven."

Coach: Jomo Sono and Shakes Mashaba.

"Nobody else can handle this group of players. You either choose between Jomo Sono and Shakes Mashaba or you put them both in charge as co-coaches. They knew these players."
