WRAP: Nabi spits fire, Downs heartbreak and 'Cocomelon' to Pirates rescue

On Weekend Wrap, we have Nasreddine Nabi furious at questions as Kaizer Chiefs failed to secure a Top Eight spot, while Mamelodi Sundowns suffered late heartbreak, and an unlikely source stepped up for Orlando Pirates.

Sundowns engineer own heartbreak

The Brazilians would have thought they had the advantage in the two-legged CAF Champions League final after Lucas Ribeiro opened the scoring against Pyramids at Loftus on Saturday.

The Egyptian side levelled matters deep in added time through Walid El Karti, earning a precious away goal ahead of the mouthwatering return fixture in Cairo on Sunday.

Sundowns appeared to be their own worst enemy by playing to conserve the result rather than going for the kill in search of the second goal.

No Top eight for Chiefs, again

Nabi came under more scrutiny after Amakhosi put in an underwhelming performance to end the season with a goalless draw against Polokwane City.

As a consequence, they miss out on next season's MTN8 for a second consecutive campaign, finishing ninth.

In the post-match press conference, the Tunisian-Belgian took particular offence to a question on why their opponents generally had lesser quality players but were able to finish above the men in Gold and Black on the log.

"If you are a journalist, don't push the fans into confusion," Nabi demanded.

"Explain to fans that Nabi came here for the model football, offensive football. Why? Because we are big, Kaizer Chiefs is big.

"Why are you happy when fans are saying other teams in the Top Eight are better than us? Stellenbosch is not better than us, they are number three. How did I beat them three times?

"How did I beat Sundowns? How did I beat Orlando Pirates? With offensive football. Because this team plays football. Do you want this [direct] football [like Polokwane]?"

Chiefs' hierarchy will now have a decision to make on whether to keep Nabi, who has a two-year deal with an option for a further year.

Pirates' youngsters to the rescue

Ezimnyama Ngenkani wrapped up their away fixtures for the season with a 1-1 draw against AmaZulu FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Patrick Maswanganyi had bumbled the ball into his own net in the 66th minute to put Usuthu ahead, and it took academy product Simphiwe Selepe to restore parity 11 minutes later.

The match was Pirates' penultimate fixture of the campaign, and they will finish their record-breaking 2024/25 season with a clash against Magesi FC at Orlando on Wednesday.

Other results:
Cape Town City 0-0 Stellenbosch FC
Magesi FC 1-1 Marumo Gallants
SuperSport United 0-2 Richards Bay FC
Golden Arrows 3-2 Sekhukhune United
