My Welcome To The League Moment: I brought a 'skhaftin' to camp

In our exciting feature My Welcome To The League Moment, former Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United player Japie Motale shares for the first time a story of how he brought a 'skhaftin' to camp, unaware that the club provided free food.

Motale's football career started at the Sundowns development before moving to SuperSport United where he made a name for himself.

"The thing is I started at the Sundowns Under-19s, being promoted to the PSL team was a culture shock to me as I found out the hard way that things are done differently at that level, as you had to first go to camp before matches," Motale tells KickOff.

"That was new to me, I kept asking myself, what camp? What is it for? In the Under 19s I used to wake up in the morning and head straight to the match. We never camped in the reserves sides [laughs].

"Getting there I find out that actually in camps, we are served food, and in the mornings there are meetings...Yoh, all of that was new to me. I had just been promoted by Clemens Westerhof.

"I was young and knew nothing about camps, I didn't know whether I should bring along a blanket, a lunchbox or padkos...and the parents were also worried, they kept asking themselves if where I was going there will be food or not.

"So they decided to prepare supper for me so I could eat in camp. So bangenzela umphako.

"I still remember very well how my skhaftin looked like, they put pap, a well-roasted full chicken, vegetables, Simba chips, and juice...not knowing that all those were not necessary.

"Time for supper arrived, after realizing that no one else had brought food from home, I hid my skhaftin in my hotel room, inside my bag [laughs].

"I made sure my roommate Thomas Libih from Cameroon didn't see, otherwise I could have been the joke of the weekend.

"Guess what? I didn't eat the chicken, I ended up returning with it home. All along it was in my bag [laughs]. I kept it inside my bag for two days.

"My Mom was so surprised, she asked, what did you eat for the past two days? I told her to relax because in camp I was provided with all kinds of food. And it was free.

"This is the first time I'm talking about this, I have never told the story to anyone."
