'That was my scariest moment in football’

In this week's edition of My Muti Story, KickOff catches up with former Mpumalanga Black Aces goalkeeper Bafana Nhlapo.

Nhlapo shares a story of a strange muti man who once attempted to cut open each player's feet with a razor blade.

Where?

"That was at my former club, Nathi Lions; it campaigned in the Mvela League, but it no longer exists.

"So we were playing Benoni Premier United, do you remember The Rabbits? It was always going to be quite a tough game; these guys had the best players like Katlego Loke, Tsepo Masilela, and the legendary Bernard Parker.

"So our boss came to us at the clubhouse on the eve of the game in the middle of the night, he was with another old man who was wearing a big coat. He took out a lot of razor blades.

"Our boss started telling us how important and how big tomorrow's game was.

"He told us there was something the old man wanted to give to the goalkeeper, and that he would have to put it inside his gloves, and the goalkeeper will have not to talk to anyone until the game starts tomorrow morning. As the team's number 1 goalkeeper at the time, I couldn't agree with that [laughs]. I couldn't keep quiet the whole night.

"Then the old man turned his attention to the strikers; he said, please go outside, and once you are there, stand in front of the curtain, put your feet one by one through the window.

"And the strikers said, what? What is it you want to do to our feet and you don't want us to see? Do you want to cut our feet? How are we going to put on our soccer boots tomorrow with bleeding feet? [Laughs]. The majority of the players said no way.

"The club owner was very angry with us that night; he even begged the coach, Malombo Sibiya, to come and talk to us, and still we said no way!"

According to the muti man, why were you supposed to do that?

"Apparently, it was going to help us to beat Benoni Premier United, and at that time, we were not even fighting for promotion; we were a mid-table team."

Who was the muti man?

"He was not somebody we knew, he was from somewhere in the KwaMaphumulo Villages."

As players what did you have to do once he was done cutting your feet?

"I don't know, there were no further instructions because we couldn't go through with it. That was my scariest moment in football."

So nobody took part?

"Only a couple of guys who wanted to save their jobs at all costs."

What stood out?

"The comradeship and the brotherhood we showed for each other that night. We stood by each other."

What was the result?

"We beat Benoni Premier United 4-1, even though the muti man claimed there was no way we were going to win that match. After that win, he was nowhere to be seen."
