In this edition of My First Paycheque, KickOff catches up with former Bloemfontein Celtic star player Lebohang Kukame and gets to hear how he spent his first salary.
The 45-year-old former striker also has some stints at Maritzburg United and Roses United.
Who you signed for?
"Bloemfontein Celtic in 2006."
How much was it?
"Money was not an issue. I was just excited about signing up for Bloemfontein Celtic and realising that childhood dream of playing in the professional ranks.
"So, my first salary was R1500. We had to open bank accounts. I remember that because I opened mine at Standard Bank."
How I celebrated?
"Getting my own money was overwhelming and exciting. I went straight to Milky Lane and spoiled myself with ice cream."
What I bought with it
"I went to Spitz and bought myself a pair of Carvela shoes. Back then a pair of Carvela shoes cost R400."
Did it last you the full month?
"Back then we were not familiar with this thing of buying groceries. As players, we stayed together and cooked together at the Molemela Hotel. The likes of Thapelo Liau were also there.
"Tony Illodigwe used to cook for us (laughs). We used to put together some money and Illodigwe would buy food and cook for us.
"There was this special meal he used to cook for us, he would mix cow trotters with chicken, potatoes and tomatoes.
"Thapelo Liau's mother would also cook for us when came to visit."
